Excellence in Research

The amount of competitive external funding and the inclusion of one research team from the School of Engineering into a Centre of Excellence of the Academy of Finland give some idea of research excellence at Aalto University. In addition the Research Centre of Excellence for Arctic Shipping and Operations funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) started in September 2013 and is the first of its kind in the Nordic Countries.

Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research

Aalto University is involved in the Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research led by Juha Hyyppä (Finnish Geodetic Institute), where one of the participant research groups is a group led by Hannu Hyyppä from the department on Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics. Other participants are University of Oulu and University of Helsinki.

International Research Centre of Excellence in Arctic Shipping and Operations

The scope of the Research Centre of Excellence in Arctic Shipping and Operations is the holistic treatment of design relevant features and their identification to advance safe arctic operations and transport.

The Centre is headed by Aalto University in cooperation with three other universities; Helsinki University, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU (Trondheim) and Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John's, Canada). The Centre will support eight doctoral dissertations on risk management in Arctic operations over a period of five years.

Centre is led by Professsor Pentti Kujalapentti.kujala [at] aalto [dot] fi and Professsor Jukka Tuhkurijukka.tuhkuri [at] aalto [dot] fi, Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Applied Mechanics.
